Granny Stripes Candy Cane Scarf {Free Crochet Pattern}

I know that many of you like to get a jump on your Christmas gift crocheting, so I thought I would share this little gem, now.

Granny Stripes Candy Cane Scarf

I made this crochet Granny Stripes Candy Cane Scarf pattern for my mother-in-law, last Christmas.
The scarf is made of granny stripes, using increases and decreases to work corner to corner. For the color switch, you can crochet over the ends as you go, if you wish. This will save you from having to weave all of them in later. Or, you can do what I did, and take the extra time and effort to do the Russian join for each color change. Admittedly, it is kind of a pain, but the final result is well worth it!

If you enjoy making scarves, you might like my Five Braid Infinity Scarf, Basket Weave Scarf, Quick Infinity Scarf, Lacy V-Stitch Scarf, or The Husband Scarf patterns. There are also a couple more for you to check out in my Pattern Gallery.  Which scarf pattern do you like best? I’d love to hear your opinions. Leave me a comment.

Supplies:
Size I crochet hook
Worsted weight yarn in red and white

Pattern:
Throughout pattern, work alternating 2 rows red, and 2 rows white.
Ch 5
Row 1: (3 dc, ch 1, dc) in 5th ch from hook (first corner made). Turn.
We will be making increases, now.
Row 2: Ch 4,  3 dc in ch 1 space, (3 dc, ch 1, dc) in corner space. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 4,  3 dc in ch 1 space, 3 dc into space between clusters, (3 dc, ch 1, dc) in corner space. Turn.
Rows 4-8: Repeat row 3, working the “3 dc into space between clusters” part across, as many times as necessary.

Now we will shape the rectangle with decreases and increases.
Row 9: Ch 4, 3 dc into next space between clusters (this decrease forms the second corner), 3 dc into each space between clusters, stopping before you work the last space, (3 dc, ch 1, dc) in the last space (increase made). Turn.
Row 10: Ch 4, 3 dc in ch 1 space (increase made), 3 dc into each space between clusters, stopping before you work the last space, (ch 1, dc) into the last space.
stopping before you work the last space.
Rows 11-desired length: Repeat rows 9 and 10.

Finishing- decrease to square off.
**Ch 4, 3 dc into next space between clusters (decrease made), 3 dc into each space between clusters, stopping before you work the last space, (ch 1, dc) in the last space (decrease made and corner formed). Turn.
Repeat from ** until second to last row (this row has 1 space, 1 cluster, 1 space).
Final Row: Ch 4, dc into space at end of row.
Finish off and weave in all ends.
Add fringe, if desired.
