This cute butterfly applique can be used for many different things. You can embellish a hat, a dress, use it as a cute patch to patch up the hole that your little girl just got in her new jeans (doesn’t this always seem to happen?) or use it for a number of other things.
I love to hear your ideas! Jump down to the comments section below and share what you would do with this butterfly.
Check back later this week to see what I did with it.
Hmmm… I don’t know about you, but I am thinking of what I can do with other appliques, too. If you are looking for a few others, please check out my Sunflower Appliques, the cute flowers in my Garden Party Tic-Tac-Toe game, or the flower that I paired with my Small Cluster Headband. And for you Star Wars fans, I made a Yoda Applique for May the 4th.
What appliques would you like to see? Maybe a butterfly? Okay. We will get back to the task at hand.
The butterfly works up really quick, and you can choose whatever colors you want. I used a cotton yarn, but I am sure it will turn out nicely with any worsted weight yarn.
Size J crochet hook
Worsted weight 100% cotton in yarn 3 colors
With color A, ch 11
Starting at head
Round 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, slip st in next 8, (slip st, ch 1, slip st) in last ch, working the back side of the foundation ch and skipping the ch you just worked, slip st 8, sc in the last ch. Join to first sc with sl st. FO
For the wings:
Round 2: **Skip the first 2 sc and the first 2 slip sts, join color B to the next stitch. Ch 4, (4 Tr, 1 dc) in the same st, slip st in the next st, (3dc, 1 sc) in the next st, sl st in the next st. FO*
Turn so that the wing you just worked is on the bottom, and the head is on the right. Locate your first slip st closest to the head and skip that st and the next one. Join your yarn to the next (3rd) slip st. Repeat the pattern from ** to * for the second wing.
Round 3: Join color C to the bottom slip st of the first ch 4 of one of the wings. Ch 2, hdc up each of the 4 ch sts, hdc in the 4 tr sts, hdc in the dc, slip st into the first sc of the smaller wing half, sc in the next 2 dc, sc in the next sc, slip st in the same slip st as the previous row. FO
Repeat with other wing.
Weave in all ends. Tie a bit of yarn to head and knot ends for antennae.
