Toddler Tote Bag {Free Crochet Pattern}

Remember the Sunflower Appliques that I showed you on Monday? Well, as promised, here is what I did with the larger one.
Crochet, Free Crochet Pattern, Crochet Bag, Crochet Tote Bag, Crochet Toddler Tote Bag,
This bag was created when my younger girls were playing dress up. My (then) toddler wanted a purse, since her sisters had one. This was the perfect size for her to carry around and hide her toys in.

This toddler tote is crocheted in rounds and is easy to make. It uses a large hook, and works up quickly. I used less than a skein of yarn and adorned the tote with my large sunflower applique.

Toddler Tote Bag
(measures approx. 8 1/2 X 8 1/2 inches)

Supplies
Size K crochet Hook
1 skein of worsted weight yarn of your choice (It actually uses a little less than 1 skein)
Embellishments of your choice (optional)

Pattern:
Ch 27
Round 1: hdc in the 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next 23 ch, 2 hdc in last ch, pivot work to work on the back side of the foundation chain, work 24 hdc, 2 hdc in the last ch. Join with sl st to the first hdc. (52)
Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc around. Join. (52)
Round 3: Ch 2, hdc back loop only in each hdc around. Join. (52)
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in each hdc (working both loops, now) around. Join. (52)
Round 5-14: Repeat round 4.
Round 15: Ch 2, hdc in each dc around. Join. (52)
Round 16: Repeat round 15. Finish off and weave in ends.

For the handles:
Skip the first 5 hdc. Attach yarn to the 6th hdc. Ch 2, hdc in same stitch as join, hdc in the next 2 sts. Turn.
[ch 2, hdc 3, turn.] repeat 20 times.
Now, counting from the 3rd hdc of the first row of the handle (on the bag itself, now), skip the next 9 hdc. Attach handle with a sl st to the 10 hdc.
Ch 1, sc in the same st as the join, through the bag and the hdc of the handle. Sc through the last 2. Finish off and weave in ends.

Skip the next 11 stitches and attach yarn to the 12th stitch. And repeat the instructions above to make the second handle.

Choose an applique so sew onto your toddler tote, if you wish.

Happy Crocheting!

  1. thank you for the adorable pattern. I saw it and started crocheting immediately. I got to the straps and where you said to put them didn't seem to line up in the correct spot so I ended up just making a long strap from one side to the other like on a cross body bag. thanks again

    1. Glad you like the pattern! Sorry the straps didn't work out for you. I will have to work another one up soon, and see if I can figure it out. :)
Great that you found a solution! I'd love for you to share a pic on my Facebook page! :)
